PRESTON HIRE RACING – OUR SUPERCARS JOURNEY
Reflecting upon the journey of Preston Hire Racing is a rewarding and satisfying exercise. As Naming Rights Partner of Team 18 from 2016 – 2018, our business took on new challenges, new experiences and overall an enormous growth period of brand exposure and awareness during this time.
Whilst the race results and podium finish we all dreamt of weren’t realised, Preston Hire has enjoyed a long list of other achievements to be proud of. Our involvement with Supercars and Team 18 has taken our business to a national stage with our brand recognition skyrocketing and work opportunities broadening.
We have had the pleasure of hosting and getting to know hundreds of our valued and loyal customers at races across the country and in New Zealand, our staff have actively engaged with and celebrated our sponsorship and we have met and made lifelong friendships with some amazing people.
However, aside from the business benefits of this partnership we wanted to share our favourite highlights from the track over the years and the moments that made our team who they were…
Lee Holdsworth’s Speedy Recovery 2016
2016 was a tough year for the entire team with our legendary driver, Lee Holdsworth, suffering extensive injuries after a horrific crash at the Darwin round of the 2016 championship.
Whilst this accident is far from a highlight, the way in which Lee focused on healing and committed to his rehab is to be commended. Many drivers would have been out for the season after breaking their pelvis, knee and ribs, however Lee’s resilience and desire to be back behind the wheel saw him back in the car after only 2 months ensuring he was part of the Preston Hire Racing Enduro team line-up. This was a really proud moment in the wake of a horrible incident.
Preston Hire Racing 2017 Livery
When Preston Hire Racing hit the track for the start of the 2017 season, we quickly became known as the Bumblebees! Ditching the predominately-black livery of 2016, the new season launched our new look aligning with the bold, industrial and tough look of our business products.
Preston Hire YELLOW was on display loud and proud!
People often spot on equipment on construction sites or high-rise buildings commenting that our bold yellow jumped out at them. Now our race car would do the same on the track!
Our livery was such a standout that it featured in both national advertising campaigns for Coopers Brewery and Pulsar Watches!
Tyrepower Tasmanian SuperSprint – 2017
No one will forget the treacherous weather conditions, the intense rain, fog and THAT CRASH at the Tasmanian SuperSprint in 2017.
As we watched on and saw the frightening spray that the field were battling in as they approached the hairpin everyone was on the edge of the seats. The inevitable happened and car after car collided into one another. It seemed inappropriate to cheer, however as the wreckage was unveiled and our PHR car skilfully dodged and weaved through the debris and made it out the other side unscathed … we couldn’t help but be relieved!
WD-40 Phillip Island – 2017
The weekend was filled with tyre blowouts and controversy creating one of the most exciting and unpredictable races we have attended. The team worked tirelessly all weekend with precise pit-stops, a solid race strategy and great driving by Lee.
Preston Hire Racing finished the Sunday race in P5 gaining 10 positions from our qualifying grid position! This was the first Top 5 finish we had experienced with our little team lined the concrete track barrier fence and cheered Lee over the finish line.
‘Preston Erection’ Retro Round 2017
It was the split livery that raised an eyebrow and created a chuckle!
In 1969, Preston Hire was known as Preston Erection with a bright pink logo to accompany! Given Retro Round is all about paying homage to the past, Preston Hire Racing proudly looked back on the heritage of their naming rights sponsor and revealed the history of our business with both liveries side by side. We were equally impressed with the wit and puns that our social media fans delivered too!
TEKA Newcastle Round 2018
Beyond the Supercars championship, Preston Hire Racing also competes in the TEKA Series (The Endurance Karting Association) across NSW. Bringing together both teams, PHR entered a VIP kart to the Newcastle TEKA Round giving Lee Holdsworth, Charlie Schwerkolt and Justin Ruggier a chance to get back to the grassroots of the sport and battle with some of the best enduro karters in the state.
The banter and competitive spirit was strong across the weekend with lots of laughs, mechanical challenges and a shared love of motorsport. A big thanks to Lee, Charlie and Justin for taking time out of their busy schedules to be part of this great series.
Coates Hire Newcastle 500 Qualifying 2018
Rounding out what has been a frustrating year in regards to performance, the team prepped the car beautifully for Qualifying and the Top 10 Shootout on both days of the weekend.
Combined with Lee’s love of a street circuit – particularly this track – Preston Hire Racing qualified P5 for both of the final races of the year giving us our best start positions of the year and a long walk along the grid pre-race which no one was complaining about!
There are so many more moments that we will remember fondly, laugh at, cry at and declare “Well … That’s Racing!” Thanks for the memories all! We look forward to our next chapter.
